Distressed Denim Skirts

Are you as surprised as I am that denim skirts are a thing now? And that they actually look good enough to want to throwback to this 90's trend?

They're much more tattered than they were back then, as if they'd been sitting 20 years in your parents' dusty (and possibly critter-run) attic, along with an old discman and beat-up Birkenstocks (speaking of 90's revivals). And they're pencil-shaped. Although minis are as popular as ever (see Jessica, of Tuula, below), I like the recent reincarnation of longer, almost knee-length denim skirts, a nice contrast to their well-worn tatters and form-fitting shape.

Take a cue in styling from these ladies and pair with clean and classic tops, like an oversized button-down or dark blazer to tone down the grunge of your frayed skirt.

And if you're handy with a razor, sandpaper, and perhaps have a dremel laying around, you might want to head over to a thrift shop, pick up a denim skirt and go at it. Watch Free People's video DIY tutorial; or read what a "denim-repair-and-distress specialist" recommends over at Vogue. Or, let zoo animals do the work for you, as one Japanese zoo did for charity -- 'naturally' tattered, gnawed-by-lions limited-edition jeans! (video)
